Discrimination at Portland Pride
Guess who's not allowed at Pride
It’s that time of year again when corporations wave pride flags to let us know they will accept gay money too (and please, please give us a good ESG score).
Corporations such as Nike, Alaskan Airlines, and Fred Meyer, etc. are sponsoring this year’s Portland Pride Waterfront Festival.
To embody just how inclusive of a celebration this is, the fest is only accepting attendees who have “proof of full vaccination”.
From their website:
COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements for the Portland Pride Waterfront Festival
ALL attendees, age 5 years and older, are required to show proof of vaccination at the festival gate entrance as they enter the festival grounds.
Self-reported vaccination records that are not verified by a health care provider cannot be accepted.
Attendees will be required to either have gotten a complete series of COVID-19 vaccine shots within the six months before the Pride event (January to June 2022) or have your most up to date COVID-19 booster shot.
Papers please, gays. We need to make sure you aren’t carrying any diseases. How far we have come, indeed.
This is just the latest example of what exhausts me, a gay man, about Pride month. The whole ordeal has become rather patronizing and primarily serves as a quick and ready cloak of virtuosity for greedy corporations and divisive political agendas. And now, what supposedly “represents me” undermines my bodily autonomy and excludes me openly. (Not that I have any desire to go to these corporate publicity stunts anyways. I attended once and that was enough, believe you me. That’s a story for another day.)
While Pride is celebrated, the wealth gap remains higher than it’s ever been in history. The younger generations increasingly can’t afford homes, or the middle class lifestyles of their parents. So much of the public are indentured servants due to predatory loaning practices. Global unappointed councils are busy ratifying treaties, making decisions for our “democracies”. We’re being terrorized into surrendering freedoms for safety, as our world, from schools to grocery stores, increasingly resembles a maximum security prison.
Bread and circuses. Bread. And. Circuses.
